“Asshole,” he rasped, and moved to pass me a second time. I reached out and shoved him hard in the chest, but he stayed on his feet and passed me. However, he was wearing yellow and blue: wrong colors. Not Steve. Seconds later I crossed the line.

“Disquali ed—green! Green, number 759, DQ!” A race official pulled me out of line. I was furious. I would have been perfectly happy to get disquali ed for throwing a punch at Steve, but not at a complete stranger!

“Leave your pugilism in the woods, next time,” Coach told me, lightly.

“You want me to take that guy out for you?” asked Adam.

“I beat Tom! I beat Ace!” Steve shouted. He had. He’d nished two minutes behind me, but he’d beaten me: A disqualied runner is bumped down to last place.

“Shut up, Sweatpants,” Adam said, and threw him in the bushes.
